Despite being robbed of the 2006 Kentucky Mr. Basketball title after the end of his stellar career at Shelbyville High, A.J. Slaughter showed over the course of his freshman campaign on the Hill why Coach Darrin Horn and knowledgeable observers around the state proclaimed Slaughter the true top player in Kentucky's high school class of 2006.
Averaging an impressive 6.1 ppg and 1.7 rpg in 16 minutes of action per game, the wiry, athletic Slaughter poured in 18 points in his debut as a Hilltopper on the road versus Kennesaw State. That mark is believed to be the highest scoring opening game for a WKU freshman since at least the 1950's.
In 2007-08, no sophomore slump is expected to be in the cards for Slaughter as he is primed to emerge as a likely starter and pivotal player for a seemingly loaded Hilltopper Basketball squad. Like fellow sophomore Jeremy Evans, A.J. Slaughter has "Star" written all over him and by the time their four years together on the Hill are complete the pair could go down in Hilltopper lore as one of the finest 1-2 punches in WKU history.
