Remembering Red7
On July 2, 2010 the Hilltopper Haven community lost one of its longest and finest members. George Wells, aka Red7, passed away in Bowling Green at the age of 87.
George was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II and participated in many of the key battles in the Pacific. At Iwo Jima George served aboard naval landing craft and helped evacuate dead and wounded Marines from the island. At Iwo Jima, he was also witness to one of the most famous moments in U.S. history as he saw the raising of the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi. George later retired from the Naval Reserve after 20 years of service.
After the war, George graduated from Western Kentucky University and also attended Middlebury College in Vermont and Columbia University in New York City.
George’s last post was made one week prior to his death. He was giving his thoughts on the multitude of transfers and possible transfers that WKU seems to be involved with lately…. “It is too early to tell what this “pattern” will create. If it produces a winner, then I’m all for it. Sure, there is no question that if we could consistently recruit top 100, four year players, that is the best way to go…..but, we have to realize that is highly unlikely this day in time.
It really has been hard for me to get a handle on our present coaching staff…..they have impressed at times and, at others, have left me scratching my head trying to figure them out.
Maybe this JUCO/Transfer style is what will work for them. We shall soon find out.”
George was quite possibly the classiest and wittiest poster on Hilltopper Haven and he was a true Hilltopper and a true Hilltopper fan. He’ll be missed by the HH community and most of all by his family and friends.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Southern Kentucky, 5872 Scottsville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42104.
George, you will be often remembered and forever missed. A great guy and friend, and a true Hilltopper.
George will surely be missed, if we could retire a fan’s jersey he would be a person we would do it for.
What a wonderful article, and a great way to showcase the new home page! We all love and will miss Red7, but are so glad we got to know him via the Hilltopper Haven.
Great loss for Hilltopper Nation. Red7 will be missed.
