HH: So when was your last visit to Western?
DG: My last visit was in April. I had a chance to hang out with Caden Dickerson, Jamal Crook and those guys and went
to a baseball game. I met a lot of new people and it was so crazy because a LOT of people know me and I wasn’t expecting that going to a baseball game as far as that many people knowing me….but that was probably the best visit by far as far as getting out there and being with people and just playing with the players and things like that so it was good.
HH: Obviously you’re still strongly committed to coming to Western. Do you still plan on signing this Fall?
DG: Yeah, I do plan on signing but I’m not going to lie to you I have been talking to my parents just to make sure that this is the right decision for me and I believe it is but there have been some other schools trying to get involved but I do want to sign in November and just get it over with so that I won’t have any of those problems of other schools calling me but my verbal is still very solid with Western I’ll say.
HH: Are your parents all for you coming to Western or would they rather you stay close to home?
DG: They really just want me to be happy. It really doesn’t matter if I stay close to home although it probably would be better for my mother because my mother she really doesn’t like planes at all and for her to come to my game at Western she’s going to have to fly but I’ll be making my official visit during Hilltopper Hysteria and I will be bringing my parents but they won’t really be at a lot of my games which isn’t going to bother me because I’m used to it now doing all of these AAU games and being away from my parents so it really won’t bother me at all being that far away from home.
HH: I know you’re in Orlando right now in the AAU Nationals. How’s your team doing?
DG: We got beat in the Elite 8 by the St. Louis Eagles, Brad Beal’s team, who’s supposedly one of the top 10 players in 2011. I played against him and it was a real good experience to tell you the truth but I believe I did my job on him. I held him to about 8 points and he fouled out about six minutes into the fourth quarter so he struggled the whole game but we lost by three points. That would have been a big win for us because we would have had a chance to go the championship game and play on ESPN.
HH: Are there any certain areas of your game that you’ve really been trying to improve over the summer?
DG: I think the main thing that I’ve really improved in is my shooting. I’ve really shown that I can shoot beyond the three-point line really good….one dribble pull-up drive, I showed that a lot with Coach Mac and Coach Harper coming to my games and they noticed that I had been working on it. My handles have gotten a lot better….I’ve just got to keep working on those things and I want to get a lot stronger, which will happen coming up to my senior season, so I’ve still got time.
HH: You’re friends with Kelvin Amayo….what’s going on with him now, is he still looking at Western?
DG: We talk about it a lot. He plays on my AAU team so we definitely talk about it a lot. Western is still after him but he has to get some things in order as far as his academics so that they can really offer him the scholarship but Western is still on him. He said he was going to take his official visit with me during Hilltopper Hysteria so hopefully I can get him to be in the backcourt with me but Western they’re still looking at a couple of good point guards….Cezar Guerrero and Miles Mack and those guys but the guy I really want to committ is Cezar, he’s a real good point guard. Get me and him in the backcourt and Coach Mac said yesterday that we would be one of the top backcourts in the country if Cezar Guerrero commits.
HH: Are there any other guys that you play with or against in AAU or anywhere else that you’re trying to talk into joining you at Western?
DG: Well, there’s a couple of guys, I’m sure you know them….George Fant from Kentucky and James White from Georgia and he’s actually out here in Orlando, I was just talking to him a couple of days ago. Josiah Moore…..and that’s about it along with Kelvin. Those are the people who Western really wants. They’re really trying to lock down on point guards and a center but they’re really trying to get Cezar and hopefully they’ll get that done. I just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago actually.
HH: So what do you think about George Fant? Are you pretty impressed with him?
DG: Yeah, I like him a lot. I actually got to talk to him a little bit before my game yesterday. He told me he was going to be at the Elite Camp at Western in August and I’m going to be down there so hopefully we can catch up on a few things.
HH: Does he talk like he wants to come to Western? Do they seem to be his favorite?
DG: He always tells me that and his father is right there so I know he’s not lying. He always tells me Western is at the top but with him I think he just wants to wait until the summer ends and he gets all the information from these other schools and then narrow his list down but I’m sure that Western will still stay at the top of his list though.
HH: Anything you want to say to the Hilltopper fans in closing?
DG: Just that I’m still committed to Western and I’m not going anywhere. I have one more year left in high school and then I’ll finally be there and I’m ready to put on a show and show everybody what I can do.
