I do like what I've seen so far, but I don't think I've said anything to trigger that kind of reaction (unless you REALLY like big, strong bo-ahs).
I think the best player we have is probably a three way tie between Steff, Serge and Juan with Steff a bit ahead so far. I love the speed the new kids bring...all of them. Snap's already my favorite. He just flies up and down the floor and man can he get up. We still don't have a center that I'm comfortable with. I'd start Juan or Cliff, I guess. I think Drane can play too. He is very fast for a 6'8" guy. Truly, everyone looks promising. AJ was playing and didn't dominate. He looked great, just didn't dominate. Snap hung with him fine. The team with AJ, Steff and Kene probably won more games than any other conglomeration.

Now, if you'll recall last summer's histrionics, I did say I liked some of the new kids (mostly the three that never played a minute here). I was also mum when the "best talent ever" hype began. I thought that was just flat out goofy. They weren't even in the same gym with Clem's, Tellis' or Mac's teams. I'm sure the same would be true of some from before my time that Mr. Smith (Gilbert) refers to.

Does that mean you have a point guard you are comfortable with - Brown? Crook? Caden?? And was Juan playing center?

Did Steff's handles and shot look better?

Can't wait to see Snap play. With his motor and athleticism the sky is not the limit.

I'm hoping that we get some good play at the point guard this year.
I am being cautious to expect too much from Ken Brown and I'm not sure
if Jamaal Crook is ready to make a big contribution or not. Caden isn't really a point guard in my mind.

I just hope we can sign a freshman point guard either this fall or next spring so we can stop having to rely on JUCO's at the pg position. It's for the same reason I prefer not having to rely on JUCO quarterbacks on the football field. Point guard is different from all the other positions and requires a bigger transition.

if the new juco point guard doesn't have the starting job NAILED DOWN SHUT right now then we are gonna be seeing tons of 'clownball'

god forbid he gets hurt during the year.....we have absolutely no backup at that position.

Its amazing how Caden is forgotten in the mix. Who would know if he can play point. Last year we usually would make one pass and go one on one. If thats the style, then yep your right. But he can shoot with any and all. IQ has to fit somewhere. Or maybe it doesn't.

Anyway, this is going to be an exciting team I believe. It looks to have all types of weapons which it takes to win at this level and with the schedule we have. It would be nice to have a true powerful center. Even without that if we can play defense and execute we will be fine. I really hope it becomes a team and that they gel quickly.

WKU basketball recruiting update: Anthony Hickey
27 07 2010

I spoke with Christian County coach Kerry Stovall this afternoon about rising senior point guard Anthony Hickey, a player who currently holds a scholarship offer from Western Kentucky for the 2011 season.

Hickey, 5-10 162, averaged over 15 points and six assists per game last season to lead the Colonels to a 30-4 record and into the second round of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 in Lexington.

An extremely quick player, Hickey is a pure point guard who – at the high school level – seems to effortlessly be able to break down defenses to both create for others and get his own shot.

All those things combined with a strong summer in the AAU circuit should put Hickey among the list of names that will likely have an argument for Mr. Basketball in Kentucky this coming season.

“He’s played extremely well (this summer in AAU) and he’s doing the things he’s needed to do this summer to get himself ready to play at a high level,” Stovall said. “He’s as fast a kid with the basketball as you’ll find in this state and elsewhere really. He’s a great defender who shares the ball very well.

Saw this kid play against BG last season and the State Tourney. He reminds me of Mark Bell but quicker and I would love to have this kid as a Topper. Not a great shooter but he does what it takes to win.

We are after some very good guards for next year.
I would love to pick up Myles Mack or Trey Burke but could be happy with Anthony Hickey.

Derrick Gordon is a must sign though. I read where coach Harper was at one of his AAU games the other day and DG appears to remain solidly committed to WKU. Let's hope he signs in November.

Nick has an article on Anthony Hickey on his blog.

“He really likes Western, I’m not going to lie to you about it,” Stovall said. “He’s gotten to know the staff really well and he really does like Western a lot. But right now with AAU, those guys are everywhere – Orlando, Indianapolis, Las Vegas – they travel so much that their heads start to spin pretty much throughout the whole summer. So we’ll have to sit and talk later this week about what he’s got on his mind. Whether he wants to commit early or wait. But that’s a decision that he and his mom and his dad will all three make together, and that’s the best way to do it.

“But there’s no question Western will be involved in this to the end, no question whatsoever.”

Let's don't forget that Crook was a freshman last year and trying to learn under Sally.

I would like to think he will emerge this season as a really solid backup to Brown who is very good.

We are going to be okay at this position especially if Crook steps up and all signs are there that he will.

..... and personally, I think Crook's best contributions could be on the defensive end. I hope Darnell has had his ear this off season.

Is Darnell Mee still working with the team? I wasn't sure if he was going to continue this season or not.

there's no reason they couldn't be on the defensive end swordfish. he's very quick and has long arms.

but.......he was AWFUL defensively last year. caden was 10 times the defender and twice as slow. he has terrible defensive skills. the great thing about defense is you can improve it easier than offense....especially if you already have the quickness. you just have to buy into it. i think some kids are born to play defense.....i could have told you that about darnell mee the first time i saw him in the tenn. hs. playoffs.

i honestly don't expect nada out of him and expect him to be recruited over faster than you can say william green. there was a reason nobody else in the united states of america wanted him and we didn't pick him up until the end of summer.

his shot is awful and his dribble skeers the bejezzus out of me. to his credit.....he does look to pass first. if the juco is anywhere near as good as folks say he is don't look for crook to get much playing time.

Just in case anyone doesn't understand Kmac when he said Juan Patillo is a defensive stopper.

And what haskins is talking about when he said Kene Anyigbo is a "man"

One of the weakness Kmac shored up when he went out and found a shooter.

Brandon Peters...no video needed. Besides it's his DRIVE that impresses me the most. The way he took his team on his shoulders and lead them to a State Championship and the #1 team in the nation.

Now to the key player that was missing last season and Kmac...no, Harper went out and found. Ken Brown

This video is 2 years old and he looks like a stud PG then. Like dahbeed said, if Brown isn't our PG then we're in trouble. I know this is a highlight video and the team Brown is playing against could be like a Greenwood or Potters Children Home team but he still impresses me...and probably even Dahbeed?

Let the hype begin....

I know I can't wait for the season to start.....speed, quickness, defense, and shooters,...OH MY!

Was I comfortable with a point guard? Well yes. It was a pick up game, so I couldn't tell (no pressure, etc.). Jamal Crook looks taller and much improved. Ken Brown looks tough. Caden looks good too.

Steff shot it very well. He could shoot 40-45% from 3 this year. I didn't notice a difference in his handles, but he seemed to be running really well. You can tell Serge has really worked on his shooting too.

Darnell was in the building. I saw him, but not at the pick up game. I think Khalil will play a lot right away and so will Snap. They just score so effortlessly. Again, Drane, Anyigbo and Teng are all keepers. Cliff was hurt, couldn't play. Between them all, I'd say we'll be better inside. We definitely will rebound better. Inside is not a place for the faint hearted right now.

gunz.....thanks for the videos. i'm home now and able to watch them.

i actually had seen all of them but the brown one before.

a lesser man could be fooled into 'believing the hype'

fortunately for me....and unfortunately for the rest of the readers...i'm not a lesser man.

brown is way too quick for 'clownball'....wait until he steals a ball and takes off and ignores 'the international stopsign'...his culo will be on the bench next to marchant for the first half of the season. the thing i was most impressed with was him busting out for steals...very quick.

but......i think it was actually anchored christian they were playing...i'm pretty sure i saw a.c. legend 'kevin hamm' playing for them.

the best thing about the 'no more big macs for you' khalil mcdonald video was alicia keys....i love her in that song...well i pretty much love her period. (sorry wku uno uno uno....i'm straight up admitting i'd prolly cheat on you with her if the opportunity ever arose)

he hits some pretty deep threes....the only problem is the guy supposed to be guarding him is as far away as txcock stays from the celery in a buffet line. i can hit those and i'm ready for the nursing home. give me a week to make a mix tape and i'll look all world.

i'm pretty sure the kene anyigbo game was being played on 9 foot upward rims so that one is out too.

if i were a lesser man....those videos would have me psyched. but....i'm gonna stay strong until i see these guys perform against powerhouses like ulm and indiana state.

and none of the videos told me what i need the most.....'can you stay between your man and the hoop'??? we had plenty of folks pulling from downtown like khalil last year but we didn't have plenty of folks that could stop mother teresa off the dribble last year.

nice try amigo....you almost got me.

love always,

dahbeed.
