... as once again, for the 6th straight year, we lead the SBC in athletes honored for their academic achievements.
Well done, all of you. You know who you are !
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky University led all Sun Belt Conference schools in 2009-10 by having 212 student-athletes honored by the conference for their academic performance, the league office announced Wednesday. WKU has now had more individuals honored by the league academically than any other institution in each of the last six years.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment on the heels of our recent APR success, and it validates that our student-athletes have their priorities in line and are properly focused on academics,” Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ross Bjork said. “Student-athletes face a multitude of distractions and demands on their time, and to consistently win championships while also excelling in the classroom is a testament to their dedication and perseverance. These accolades once again demonstrate the perfect blend of academic and athletic success here at WKU.”
WKU had a total of 212 student-athletes recognized: 109 honored for making the conference’s Academic Honor Roll, which is awarded to those maintaining a 3.0-3.49 GPA, and 103 honored for making the conference’s Commissioner’s List, which honors those with a 3.5 GPA or better during the 2009-10 academic year.
This year marked the fourth consecutive year the total number of student-athletes from Sun Belt Conference schools topped the previous year’s number of Commissioner’s List and Academic Honor Roll awards winners.
WKU is one of only five Sun Belt Conference schools to exceed the NCAA required 925 Academic Progress Report Rate (APR) in every men’s and women’s sport.
For all 412 WKU student-athletes, the overall cumulative average GPA is 2.93 and 213 student-athletes (52%) are maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Nine of the university’s athletic teams have a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better and 17 athletic teams have a cumulative team GPA of 2.8 or higher.
A total of 83 student-athletes graduated in the last calendar year, as 23 graduated in December of 2009 and 60 graduated in May of 2010. The 83 student-athletes represent 18 separate sports.
